Beyond the wacky eyebrows and vibrant graffiti prints, the Celine Spring 14 collection was full of bold ideas. Tubular collars in clean, shiny metals or wrapped with tribal patterned and solid sleeves hung from models necks in what felt like a new, modern version of the choker, but perhaps no more forgiving to wear. Crunched-up, distressed cuffs in primal colors layered with large circle enamel cuffs in Lichtenstein-esque shades of snappy yellow, blue, white and orange graced bare arms. Are we finally over rhinestones? Philo certainly is, at least for spring. The shoes and bags were equally adorned with gleaming metal circles, balls and geo-shapes as heels and handles. Can you balance on a ball? Luscious leather clutches and trapezoid totes pop in black, white and the collection’s bold brights with linings that peek through oversized circular holes. Not just for decoration, Philo gives that hole functionality too…just grab onto it when you clutch your bag, silly.
Surely these modernist ideas will appear in other collections with pared down, architectural shapes, less about adornment and more about form. But how long can we go without a little dazzle and zazzle? Only time will tell, but Philo’s wealth of fresh ideas will give those of us aching for a quieter, more esoteric expression, something new to obsess over.
